According to the Lakers, Russell Westbrook's hamstring ailment is day-to-day.
According to the Los Angeles Lakers, Russell Westbrook will be classified as "day-to-day" due to tightness in his left hamstring. According to Chris Haynes of Yahoo, Westbrook's hamstring has no structural damage, but it's unclear if he'll be able to play against the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday.
After just five minutes of play on Friday against the Sacramento Kings in the Lakers' last preseason game, Westbrook left the game. He entered the locker room with a minor limp, and he was quickly declared ineligible for the remainder of the evening. The actual moment Russ was hurt is unknown.
Russ' hamstring injury may recur, so the Lakers will need to take extra precautions. With 78 games played in 2021–2022, Westbrook was the team's most dependable player in terms of availability.
What Westbrook's job will be for the Lakers when he is ready to score is the greater concern he must address. In Sacramento, Darvin Ham eventually made the decision to remove him on the bench, but the hamstring problem prevented the head coach from getting a close look at Westbrook as a backup quarterback.
LeBron James shares his takeaways from the preseason.
“Some guys play better off the ball, some guys play better with the ball in their hands, and through no fault of their own, that’s just how they’re built, you know?” Ham said about the move, which he called a “realignment” instead of a demotion. “You’re not gonna have LeBron James play without the ball in his hands for, you know, 80, 85 percent of his minutes that he’s on the floor, you know? At some point, you’ve got to allow him to orchestrate. Same thing with Russ. And so to create some type of balance, we wanted to look at this, the setup of this type of rotation and see if it works for us. The door’s not closed on Russ starting, and the door’s not closed on (whether) this works, you know. We got to explore it even further.”
While Anthony Davis continued to have lower back pain, he was unable to play in the Lakers' preseason finale. He is anticipated to start Tuesday's game at the Chase Center.
